UN’s Special Rapporteur Dr. Ian FRY visited SHRC

SHRC meets the UN’s Special Rapporteur to Discuss the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights in the Context of Climate Change

Dr. Ian FRY, The Special Rapporteur on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights in the Context of Climate Change by the UN, and Mr. Ahsan Qazi, Director-Center for Law, Justice & Policy of Denning Law School, visited the Sindh Human Rights Commission to discuss the work of the Commission on the recent floods.

The meeting was moderated by Mr. Zulfqar Shah, Member SHRC. The Chairperson of SHRC Mr. Iqbal Ahmed Detho virtually joined the meeting. Dr. Ian FRY was welcomed by Mr. Iqbal Ahmed Detho, who provided an overview of the Commission's mandate to take Suo-Moto action and conduct inspections. He then briefed the delegation on the Commission’s effort on last year's flooding. 

Judicial Member I, Mr. Arshad Noor Khan, and Judicial Member II, Mr. Aslam Sheikh briefed Dr. FRY on their judicial work, including the types of cases they handle and how they proceed with them.

Barrister Rida Tahir provided a presentation on the SHRC's work on recent floods and their relation to climate change.

Dr. Fry acknowledged the importance of a strong human rights commission in protecting the fundamental rights of citizens and ensuring justice for all.

Overall, the meeting was a great success, with valuable insights shared by the members of the SHRC and a positive response from Dr. Ian FRY. 

The Commission remains committed to its mandate of promoting and protecting human rights in Sindh and looks forward to continued collaboration with stakeholders like Dr. Ian FRY to achieve this goal.
