SHRC is delighted to host a visit from the National Lobbying Delegation

Sindh Human Rights Commission is delighted to host a visit from the National Lobbying Delegation, warmly welcomed by our Chairperson, Iqbal Ahmed Detho and our dedicated Board Members.

Chairperson (SHRC) Iqbal Ahmed Detho congratulates Mr. Naveed Anthony for becoming Deputy Speaker of the Sindh Assembly. Mr. Anthony was also part of the NLD delegation.

During the meeting, Mr. Detho presented a brief overview of SHRC’s initiatives.

Board Member SHRC Sukhdev Assardas Hemnani highlighted the efforts of SHRC regarding the Sindh Hindu Marriage Amended Act 2018 and the challenges surrounding its implementation, along with addressing various social customs.

Additionally, The chairperson also elaborated on the meetings held with Deputy Commissioner Jacobabad, Commissioner Hyderabad, and Deputy Commissioner Ghotki regarding the Non-Muslims rights. The Chairperson also highlighted SHRC's role in developing a training manual on the Sindh Hindu Marriage Amendment Act 2018.

Mr. Krishan Sharma Member NLD discussed Strengthening the Legal System for Inheritance and Succession Matters of Hindu and Christian Communities in Pakistan. He added that the implementation of the Succession Act, 1925 faces several challenges, such as cultural factors, lack of awareness, and lengthy legal processes, that hindered the realization of the rights of the heirs, especially women and minorities.

Board Member SHRC, Sukhdev Hemnani highlighted that Hindu inheritence law of 1925 & its subsequent amendment in 1929 were in practice in Pakistan untill 2005 and has been abandoned due to stark contradiction between customs /religious practices and basic human rights of the women and the girl children in the matters of inheritance. It is the need of the time to enact Hindu Inheritance Law to protect fundamental rights of the community.

The conversation then delved into topics such as District and peace committees, the right to property, job quotas, community awareness, legal plural orders, Personal laws, and many other issues of non-Muslims.

Despite numerous challenges on the ground, the SHRC is actively pursuing closer collaboration with relevant departments to advocate for policy measures aimed at addressing the concerns of non-Muslims, envisioning a brighter future for Sindh.
